Dell, A Brief History
Founded in 1984, Dell Inc. develops,
manufactures, sells, and supports personal computers
and other computer-related products. In 2006, Fortune
magazine ranked Dell as the 25th largest company in
Fortune 500 list. Like all the other companies, Dell
is committed to become the greenest technology company
on the planet. By designing energy efficient products,
Dell has demonstrated responsible manufacturing. But
what makes Dell stand apart from its competitors,
is its recycling efforts.
Dell became a recycling leader in
2006, when it offered its customers free recycling
of its products anywhere in the world! It introduced
its recycling service first in Australia and New Zealand
in 2004. Dell in Australia has helped customers reuse
and recycle more than 800 tonnes of computer equipment.
According to 2006 Australian bureau of statistics
figures, Australians bought 2.4 million new computers.
With intelligent recycling, Dell has managed to recycle
upto 98 percent of computer products!
It all began, when Dell laptops
caught fire in the year 2005, and it conducted an
extensive recall of 35,000 batteries sold with Latitude,
Inspiron and Precision laptops in December 2005. The
company announced free recycling of Dell branded new,
as well as old products. It also accepted other brands
in return for a purchase from Dell. It ran two free
community recycling events in Sydney and Brisbane,
hauling almost 20 tonnes of used equipment including
monitors, desktops, printers and notebook computers
and later moved to other cities like Melbourne and
Wellington. This effort in Australia helped restore
Dell's image in a big way. As of 2008, it has gained
second spot in computer sales within the industry.
