Computer is one of the important
inventions of modern world. The role played
by computers in all fields of life is simply
immeasurable. Be it as simple as office work
or as complicated as rocket science, computers
have a definite role in all of them. Now, the
day has come where a common man can have a PC
at home. A personal computer (PC) is a general
purpose computer that is mainly used by some
individuals. Now-a-days, home computers are
within an affordable cost for the middle income
groups. Also, today, they come in various styles
ranging from large vertical tower cases to small
form factor models that can be inserted behind
the LCD monitor.
Let us try to understand the
anatomy of this sophisticated machine.
Parts of Desktop PCs:
The main four parts of desktop
PCs are:
(i) Monitors: A monitor may
look like a television but it is not. Monitors
are made in a different way so that graphics
can be displayed accurately. Today, we have
LCDs (liquid crystal display) for better quality
of graphics and for great viewing.
(ii) CPU: This can be termed
as the heart of the computer. Better configured
CPUs lead to better options. It includes motherboard,
RAM, processor, hard disk, and removal disk
drives (DVD writer, floppy drivers etc) SMPS.
The aggregate performance of your computer depends
on these parts.
(iii) Keyboard/Mouse: These
are the parts through which you give inputs
and are the mostly used parts by a user. Therefore,
choose the best in the market. Hardy keys will
tire you out much faster and will make typing
more unsure and frustrating. A computer mouse
is always needed for good scrolling. As we cannot
type with a mouse, both keyboard and mouse are
needed.
(iv) Sound systems: Cheap
speakers are available. That will be sufficient
for home environments. If you are interested
in good quality sound, you may wish to get a
sound card and surround speakers.

Why do people have home computers?
For some it may be just a friend to avoid boredom.
For others, it may be the money making machine.
And for yet others, it is the best form of entertainment.
The development of Internet services have now
made it possible for us to access the whole
world with ease sitting at our homes. Now, we
can do most of our household functions with
home computers which include but not limited
to shopping, banking, payment of bills, tutoring
for kids, and relaxation via enjoying music,
and so on.
But there must be a debit
side to all these, and there is! Kids and youth
are increasingly become addicted to computers.
The kids play more and more computer games which
kills their interest of playing outdoor games.
They are being turned into couch potatoes. But
there is a way out too. Parents should be concerned
about their kids who access the Internet without
any guidance. They should make sure that their
children use it only for a specified time in
a week. Also, every user must take precautions
against the health hazards that constant use
of computers pose. Thus the conclusion is that
PCs, though a boon, can at times be a curse
as well.
